Learning is Healing
A partnership between the Advantage Testing Foundation and the Columbia University Medical Center, the Learning is Healing initiative provides one-on-one tutoring to college-age patients in the Medical Center's Day Program.
Increasing numbers of college students struggle with psychiatric issues. Many ambitious students register for taxing course loads and overextend themselves with extracurricular commitments, aggravating the everyday stress of college life and sometimes triggering or exacerbating pre-existing psychiatric disorders. These disorders can disrupt the academic careers of talented students.
Alongside supervised medical care, Learning is Healing provides personalized academic attention to students who have left school due to psychiatric disability. During weekly sessions with their AT tutors, students review past academic work, explore areas of intellectual interest, develop their organizational skills, and refine their study habits.
Ultimately, we seek to provide an effective model by which medical and educational professionals can employ academic tutoring as a valuable tool in the treatment and support of college-age students.
